The Physical Mechanism of Transition in Bluff Body Wakes

چکیده
The physical nature of the initial transition to three-dimensionality of #ow past a circular cylinder has been the subject of considerable debate in the literature. Of several proposed mechanisms, the possibility of classi"cation as an elliptical instability is re-examined in this article. Detailed Floquet analysis of the transition shows clear evidence of the growth of an elliptic instability in the forming vortex cores followed by ampli"cation by the strong strain "eld in the hyperbolic region between the forming and shed vortices. In fact, it appears that the wake immediately behind the cylinder shows distinct signs of a cooperative elliptic instability as found previously for interacting counter-rotating vortices. Further downstream, after the vortices have been shed into the wake, the instability again grows in the cores. Threedimensional simulations provide a semi-quantitative estimate of the &&elliptic content'' of instability, and con"rm that elliptic instability seems to be dominant in the initiation and maintenance of the 3-D perturbation. Numerical Simulation of the Incompressible Laminar Flow Over a Square Cylinder
Simulation of fluid flow over a square cylinder can be performed in order to understand the physics of the flow over bluff bodies. In the current study, incompressible laminar flow over a confined square cylinder, with variable blockage factor has been simulated numerically, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The focus has been on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of the cylinder. Vorticity...
متن کاملLinear feedback control of bluff body wakes
In this project, linear feedback control is used to modify the dynamics of fluid flows. We focus on two system identification and controller design strategies that target separated wakes behind bluff bodies. In particular, we aim to reduce the form drag and suppress the large fluctuations that typically develop in such wakes and are detrimental to efficiency and safety in a large number of indu...
متن کاملScaling Properties and Wave Interactions in Confined Supersonic Turbulent Bluff-Body Wakes
Results are presented from an experimental study that compares the large-scale structure, mean velocities, and scaling properties of confined, supersonic, planar, turbulent, bluff-body wakes at M∞ ≈ 2 and 3 with corresponding results from incompressible wakes. The large-scale structure of incompressible planar turbulent wakes is recovered at downstream locations x where the local relative Mach ...
متن کاملEffect of shear-layer thickness on the Strouhal–Reynolds number relationship for bluff-body wakes
In a previous paper, we provided a rationale for the empirically observed St–Re number relationship for vortex shedding in bluff-body wakes. This rationale derives from a mechanism of vortex formation observed in numerical simulations coupled with an estimate of the terms in the vorticity transport equation based on this mechanism. Adopting the typical size of the body D as the characteristic l...
متن کاملAcceleration of Bluff Body Calculation Using Mdgrape-2
Bluff body calculation was accelerated by using a special-purpose computer, MDGRAPE-2, that was exclusively designed for molecular dynamics simulations. The three main issues were solved regarding the implementation of the MDGRAPE-2 on vortex methods. These issues were the efficient calculation of the Biot-Savart and stretching equation, the optimization of the table domain, and the round-off e...
